Vision
Centering African Being
Mission
Producing African Knowledge that fosters social transformation in the lives of Black people.
Philosophy
The Centre is founded on the values of Black Consciousness which recognises the historical racist, patriarchal and global capitalist forces of oppression that Black people all over the world have been subjected to. The Centre is guided by principles of promoting the agency of black people in addressing the socio-economic and political challenges that they face while also recognizing that the modes of being of Black people are the most vital resource in the liberation of black people from the forces of racism, patriarch and capitalism.
Our History
The idea of a research centre dedicated to the study of Black Thought and African studies came from an organisation whose philosophical and ideological underpinnings are Black Consciousness, The Black Methodist Consultation. Through collaboration with the Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary, the idea of a centre for research that would exclusively focus on the intellectual productions of Black people was born and officially launched on the 19th February 2022. SMMS, is also rooted in Black history as Seth Mokitimi became the first black President of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. The Rev Mokitimi was an educationalist, leader, preacher and pastor whose life modelled the transformative servant-leadership SMMS seeks to form. The “watchword” of a new South Africa, Mokitimi said, “must no longer be white or black, but black and white, none regarding the other as a menace but each in his own way contributing towards the full harmony of our South African life.”
