The Centre for Black Thought and African Studies, as part of its Reconsidering Reconciliation programme, will be hosting the Gendering Reconciliation Dialogue on the 23 & 24th August 2023. The purpose of the dialogue is to reflect on the experiences of women who have participated in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Precisely it is it ask questions about their experiences of reconciling themselves to the racial injustices of apartheid and the attempts at healing those.
On the 23rd August 2023 we will be hosting a Film screening of the documentary Surviving John Vorster Square which tells the story of women who were detained at the infamous John Vorster Square in Johannesburg. To reserve your seat for the film screening email center@smms.ac.za
Historian and author of the book Now You Know How Mapetla Died: The Story of a Black Consciousness Martyr will be joining our dialogue and leading a reflection on Mrs Nohle Mohapi, Mapetla Mohapi's widow, and her quest for justice for the death of her husband for 47years.
Also joining us will be researchers of the VukaniBantu-TsohangBatho/UNISA whose work has focused on the experiences of the widows of the Cradock 4. They will be in conversation with widows from Untouchable Cadres, a group of widows who work for the empowerment of widows of apartheid victims crimes. The dialogue will be streamed live on our Facebook page.
