Rev. Dr. Khoza Mgojo: A transformational leader for Church and Nation

ABSTRACT

Transformational leadership find itself grounded on four pillars: Intellectual stimulation, Idealised influence, Inspirational motivation, and Individualised consideration. As such, one who is such a leader goes beyond just possessing certain attributes or traits but rather, he/she continually develops into a role model for those that he/she is leading; he/she makes moral decisions and takes moral action as is directed by the goals that they wish to achieve with the group of people that they are leading. Hammond argues that “as the leader is transformed by Christ, they may then call followers to transformation and purpose beyond themselves, so that the organisation can better advance the kingdom” (2016:257). This seminar investigates the life of the late Rev. Dr. Khoza Mgojo who we believe was an embodiment and model of transformational leadership his time. The seminar begins by looking at a biography of Mgojo’s life and proceeds to a reflection of his role in the space of education. We proceed to looking at Mgojo’s ministry in the MCSA and ecumenical space along with his leadership roles therein during his tenure. Mgojo’s involvement in the political space and his role in the society through that will be looked at in the seminar and finally, the seminar concludes by offering a critique of some contemporary aspects of the church and society which seem to ignore the contributions that Mgojo made and the role he played in the formulation of some ideas in those spaces.
